Career Development

This movie, NURSES If Florence Could See Us Now, inspired me and lifted my feelings about going into the practice during this hard time of COVID. Especially when mentioned how proud she would be to see nurses and everything we take on. This movie was released in 2013 and it made me think about how much prouder Florence would be of nurses even now. Having to start this new career of ours during COVID is intimidating but this documentary helped remind me of the reasons why and the passion that we all feel. I learned from this documentary about really how much we have all been impacted by a nurse in our lives. For us, we go in every week and maybe see the same four patients in our shifts but some of us will see different patients every single day. We go into work, most days, just thinking about how it’s “just another day” but for the patients and families we take care of, it’s not. The biggest thing I learned from this documentary was the reminder of how important it is to go into work thinking of the impact we can make and trying our best to make that happen.

Preparing for interviews is a stressful situation, at least for me. Trying to figure out what it is that will stand me apart from the others, is something that is really hard to be able to come up with. I personally like to think that my health care experience is something that is able to catch an employers eye to be able to have an interview. When getting ready for an interview I plan on researching the hospital I am applying to and seeing where they excel at, what their mission is, what a typical day looks like for a nurse on their floor and thinking of questions they could ask me. Being able to be prepared for questions will help me stand out from other candidates because it shows that I cared and that I put effort into preparation. To describe strengths is difficult for a lot of people, as we don’t want to sound conceded. My biggest strength that I want to be able to portray is my communication and work ethic. There hasn’t been a time that I haven’t been working since I turned 15 which is something that I think is a big contribute to who I am today. Another strength I would capitalize on during my interview is my ability to work as a team. From my previous job experiences, clinical and the understanding that just because you have one idea doesn’t mean that another person doesn’t have a better one, I can say that I am an effective team player.

  1. Sierra, you have clearly articulated your strengths. How would you describe any challenges or weaknesses and your plans to address them?
